I conducted an exciting experiment involving MENTOS AND SODA!!!
RESEARCH QUESTION:
Which soda (coke, coke zero, sprite) will create the highest geyser when mentos are added?
HYPOTHISIS:
If I add mentos to sprite than it would make the highest geyser because sprite has no sugar.
VARIABLES:
Independent: Type of soda
Dependent: The height of the geysers
Controlled: Mentos
MATERIALS:
-Geyser tube
-Coke
-Coke Zero
-Sprite
-Mentos (30)
-Camera
METHOD:
- Put the geyser on the soda bottles
- Add mentos to geyser tube
- Add the mentos to the soda
OBSERVATIONS
Group | Coke | Coke Zero | Sprite | |
High/ | 1 | M | H | L |
Medium/ | 2 | FAIL | H | M |
Low/ | 3 | M | FAIL | H |
FAIL | 4 | FAIL | FAIL | FAIL |
5 | FAIL | H | FAIL | |
6 | FAIL | H | M |
CONCLUSION:
My hypothesis is incorrect. Sprite turned out to have the lowest geyser. From the results, coke zero seems to have the highest geyser.
When we did this experiment I noticed that there were many fails. This was mostly because the geyser tube wasn’t entirely on the bottle. My group (group 1) got the geyser tube on, but it didn’t explode at the same time. All of the results are not accurate, as coke was supposed to have the highest geyser.
If I did this experiment again, I would ensure that the geyser tube is on all the way and that they pull the string to let the mentos in the bottle at the same time.
I found out that the mentos make the coke release more CO2 because of all its small pores. And when the CO2 releases it explodes!
