Science Criteria F Reflection

I think that I've been careful throughout all the labs that we have done in this semester. In the alternative cleaners lab, I made sure that my computer was not on the same table as the experiment. This was because, if something was spilled (mistakes always happen), all of my hard work on my computer would be gone. In the thermos lab part 1, a presentation, I tried to be creative and involve the audience! I asked the audience questions, and if they answered, I gave them a cupcake!

I work safely and use materials and equipment competently without teacher guidance. I'd give myself a 6/6.

Examples:

-During the thermos, I was sure not to leave our experiment - the thermoses could tip over and the hot water could burn someone.

-During the lab where we heated up boiling water and turned it into gas and into a liquid again, I made sure that my hair was tied and my lab coat sleeves were rolled up.

Examples:

-In the alternative cleaners lab, I made sure that the beakers were all cleaned and that they could be used in an experiment shortly without the data being affected.

-I made sure that all our equipment is not at the edge of the table in the thermos lab.

When working as part of a group, I always cooperate with others. I'd give myself a 4/6.

-I try to get everyone in the group to do work in the thermos lab part 1

-However, I think I sometimes can't keep a straight face about my group mates - like in the thermos lab.

Overall mark - 5/6. I think I deserve this mark, because I try to be enthusiastic in class. I try to be careful as well. I know how to be careful and I always keep in mind the worksheet about the rules for lab safety.

Design Cycle 4 - Evaluate

I've finished the last stage of the last design cycle for Grade 7! Here's my Evaluate stage...

Although the resolution of the images wasn’t satisfactory, the rest of the design specifications were met. In fact, all of the questions that were asked in the survey resulted in mostly positive perspective, especially in how the media was effective. However, even through redoing, and redoing voiceovers throughout the Create stage, slightly over one quarter of the survey participants still thought that the documentary had poor sound quality.

Our job was to make a documentary that informs the community of Christ the King Chapel, and will make people want to take action to preserve the chapel. We have met part of this need, because the majority of the survey participants were able to list 3 facts about Christ the King Chapel after watching our documentary. However, preserving Christ the King Chapel has not crossed the mind of our audience, as the importance of this was only briefly touched on in the beginning of the documentary.

If I could do this project again, I would want, at the end of the film, to express the great importance that preserving Christ the King Chapel has, as well as how to do this. In fact, as a side project (most likely after the Summer), I would like to learn on how to preserve Christ the King Chapel.

Overall Reflection

Throughout all the stages, I believe that researching a pacific topic was easiest. Like when I researched about using green screen, I used the advanced google search. The biggest difficulty through this whole process was managing my time. Such as leaving things to the last day or doing forgotten tasks in a rush. If I could do this design cycle again, I would redo the plan. I didn’t give a lot of thought to it, and it was sort of rushed as well. Maybe if I had given more care I would have had an even more successful product.

Impact

The documentary has informed the community. It’s been seen by my classmates and visitors to my blog. I think the biggest impact, though, was on myself. After learning the great importance the chapel has, I want to try to help preserve Christ the King Chapel, although it could take awhile.

Peer Review Peer review your plan with other students who have the same role as you. Do you need to make any changes to your plan? What changes do you need to make and why?

After looking viewing a task list with the role of the editor, I didn’t think I had anything to change because all tasks relating to the role I had before hand. However, when I looked at a task list with the role of the technical director, there was a few things I left out. Such as the task of handing in Create (which is essential to get a mark) and editing the documentary after the review date. I also had changed something else, although I didn’t make the change due to the peer review. After a day or two after my peer review, I realized it would be best to make a check list of what has to be done on the day of the field trip.

Question Reflection A strong attempt at answering the following questions: Was the plan detailed enough and why? Could the plan be followed by someone else and why?

After having experience with the previous design cycles, therefore, after looking at  all the feedback I’ve gotten from past Plan stages, I think my task list is detailed and logical. And I’ve asked a few people whether they personally thought the plan could be followed, and they have all responded yes.

Evaluation Detailed reflection on learning and progress. What did you learn? What did you do well / not so well? What improvements would you make next time?

Because we were planning to interview a visitor of the chapel, we had to know when people will be visiting. With our prior knowledge of people visit churches on Sundays, we researched to find out what times will they visit on Sunday. Our results were: 8:30, 9:30 and 11:30. I think I did well in spreading out my jobs, this way I’ll be able to easily follow my plan. To improve for next year, I would like to find people who care more about my task list. The people I found, as mentioned in the Question Reflection, they read the task list for around 5 - 10 sec. and then said “yes”.

ZEHRA

Hong Kong. Before our eyes, the area around us is developing. An exceptional quantity of our community is not familiar of the value historical and cultural architecture in Hong Kong have. Therefore, the existence of heritage sites in Hong Kong are at risk.

EMMA

Here we are at the 80-year-old Christ the King Chapel. This chapel is a significance in many catholic religious lives.

EMMA

Such as back then with Sister Joseffina, who had worked at the chapel all her life. “The chapel [was] a part of [her] religious life. [She could not have lived] without it”. And even now there are numerous people in our community alike to Sister Joseffina.

ZEHRA

On the day of April 21st, 1928, the foundation stone of the chapel was placed. On it, was engraved the words “serving the kingdom of God and upholding the love and fraternity in the family of God”. By 1930, after an abundance of Mother Margaret’s effort, the chapel was blessed. On May 10th, the chapel was opened.

EMMA

The chapel’s assistance became important during the Second World War. At the chapel, the physically injured and ill were tended, as well as the healing of souls. The vulnerable children and women were sheltered at the chapel, too.

ZEHRA

Through the years Christ the King Chapel had gone through, there has been a renovation -- the design was changed.

The structure has Roman style, however there are Corinthian columns that surrounds the chapel. The most amazing characteristic of the chapel is that it has no pillars, whatsoever. As a result, wherever you stand the altar is visible.

ZEHRA

The chapel is still in use today. The chapel welcomes Catholics, and pays no mind to race, age, gender, et cetera. This is Christ the King Chapel.

The Hong Kong that we know is nothing compared to what it was 50, 20 or even 10 years ago. An exceptional quantity of our community is not familiar of the value historical and cultural architecture in Hong Kong have.

EMMA

A group of Hong Kong’s most cherished historical sites are hidden amongst the city’s ever-towering skyscrapers. Before our eyes the city is rapidly changing, and many sites that express so much culture and heritage may be gone by the time our generation become adults –often to be replaced by yet more structures of glass and steel.

ZEHRA

Here we are at the 80-year-old Christ the King Chapel, the impact that this monument has had on the local community is huge, they have relied on the church immensely because it not only provided for the religious needs of the local Roman Catholics but has also been a centre for the activities of the wider community. For example; back in WWII hundreds of women and children sought protection during the war, here the chapel held out a helping hand and offered food, water and shelter for those whose homes were destroyed by bombs in the war the chapel also offered help to those who were physically injured and ill as well as  healing broken souls. During this time the chapel itself was under great threat from the WWII bombs. However it used all its resources to help the homeless.

The script has been improved because we meshed both scripts together, meaning we got more information. Evaluation What have I learned, what went wrong, how could I improve next time

Through the Design stage, I have learned, although this isn’t part of my role, the different shots. This knowledge was needed because, in the shot list, it was required to have the type of shot, to help Zehra with this, I took 5 mins to learn the names of each shot.

A challenge we came across in this stage was thinking of questions that would be suitable for an interview. Before that, we had decided to include an interview, however, we did not think of what questions to ask, or who to ask. Discussing what our interview questions should be took up time that was supposed to be for the shot list. Therefore, we had to stay after school twice to work on the shot list.

To improve for next time, I would like to quickly think of what has to be done, other than what is mentioned on the handout. If I do this in the future, no time would be wasted to work that has been forgotten.

Alternative Cleaning Solvents Lab Report

I made a lab report regarding a lab that had the following problem....

"How well do alternative cleaning solvents (cooking oil or butter, milk, lemon juice, vinegar, and club soda) work?"

Well, here it is....

Hypothesis:

If we changed the cleaning solvent to take out a stain on a cotton cloth, then lemon juice would be the best alternative cleaning solvent because it contains acidic and can supply some antibacterial, antiseptic concepts regarding cleaning.

Method:

1. Divide, as in cut, the cotton cloth into 18 small pieces, 6 for each the alternative cleaning solvents (3 different kinds of stainers).

2. On one of the strips, put 3 drops of the SOIL staining substance on the section furthest to the left

3. Divide the 18 pieces into 3 groups of 6

4. Put GRAPE JUICE on 1 group (6 pieces)

5. Put LEMON JUICE, VINEGAR, COOKING OIL, MILK, CLUB SODA and NORMAL DETERGENT (CONTROL GROUP) on to each of the 6 pieces

6. Put SOIL on another group (6 pieces)

7. Put LEMON JUICE, VINEGAR, COOKING OIL, MILK, CLUB SODA and NORMAL DETERGENT (CONTROL GROUP) on to each of the 6 pieces

8. Put TEA on the last group (6 pieces)

9. Put LEMON JUICE, VINEGAR, COOKING OIL, MILK, CLUB SODA and NORMAL DETERGENT (CONTROL GROUP) on to each of the 6 pieces

8. Scrub with the toothbrush for 30 seconds in a circular motion, 1 circle per second

10. Rinse the section of strip with water for 15 sec.

11. Record observations of how much of the staining substance still remains on the cotton strip

12. Clean the toothbrush until the previous substance is gone

13. Repeat this process, from 3-10, using the alternative cleaning solvents (in the following order: lemon juice, vinegar, cooking oil, club soda, milk and detergent)

Conclusion:

From the data my group has collected, we can assume that our hypothesis, "if we changed the cleaning solvent to take out a stain on a cotton cloth, then lemon juice would be the best alternative cleaning solvent because it contains acidic and can supply some antibacterial, antiseptic concepts regarding cleaning", is wrong. It turns out that milk is the most effective cleaning solvent. Lemon juice had an average of 3.5 in the cleanness scale, while milk had an average of 4.5 in the cleanness scale. The cleanness scale, expresses the amount of stain left on the stained cloth. The reason why milk might be a better cleaning solvent is that, after doing a little simple research, all the heterogeneous solvents, milk and detergent, have reasonably high results in the cleanness scale, with an average of 4.25. While homogeneous solvents, vinegar, lemon juice, club soda and cooking oil, have an average of 3. Therefore, it is evident that heterogeneous substances clean better than homogeneous substances. If you look at the particle theory, you can assume that heterogeneous substances cleans better -- the different substances in milk are attracted towards the staining substance, however at different speeds. The heat from the friction of the agitation causes different speeds. With this variety, it is more effective then a substance at one speed.

Throughout this lab, many changes have been made to the method. Our first draft of the method was changed because it was difficult to understand as it was worded unusually -- that was a minor conflict and was fixed quickly. However, when carrying out the lab, numerous problems occurred and, again, we had to change our method. We had to restart our lab two times due to keeping to a needed controlled variable; using the same type of cloth. We had expected that we would use cotton cloth, however our data wasn't accurate because just observing with the naked eye on the cloth that was stained, than cleaned with a cleaning solvent, was not accurate. We then had to restart with a thin white towel, using this cloth, stains were still evident after being cleaned by the cleaning solvents. But then, there was not enough thin white towels for everyone, and the type of cloth had to be changed again. Hence, we restarted. This time we used the countless stained and unusable lab coats. There was another problem as well -- another step that wasn't introduced to us until the day of the lab. This step was rinsing the stained cloth after being scrubbed with a cleaning solvent. This step was needed because that is the usual method to clean stained materials. We decided to have this process take 15 seconds. The data that we recollected the last time, was very similar to the data we had gotten the time before. Because of this, it is very possible that our data is reliable.

If I could do this lab again, I would like to check days before the lab whether or not the method is logical and could be carried out. This means checking if there is enough materials for all experiments, besides my own as well. Having a peer, friend, etc. check our w

Design Cycle 4 - Investigate

Revised Problem Statement What is the problem I am trying to solve, how significant in the problem, who does it affect etc

An exceptional quantity of our community is not familiar of the value historical and cultural architecture in Hong Kong have. As a result, these heritage site’s existence are at risk because of growth within our city. Even if people within our community have no attachment to these heritage sites, others are passionate, and it would be devastating to lost these sites. As a caring and global leader, informing our community of the importance of the historical structures.

Design Brief What you are going to make (documentary genre), why you are making and whom you are you making it for? What are the responsibilities within your role

I will be creating a product for the international schools in Hong Kong, by uploading our documentary to Vimeo, in order preserve the heritage sites that have an abundance of cultural and historical value. We have to adjust our documentary for this audience by having our documentary informative, so it will be the reality genre because a school’s purpose is education, and reality genre can inform our audience. Also engaging, so it will be relatively short, 3-5 minutes. Applications such as iMovie and Garageband will be used.

As a portion of the technical director, as I’m in a group of 2, I’m responsible for part of the light and sound quality of the documentary. For light we would most likely use the natural lighting - not studio light. Back light would be useful as it highlights facial features and hair, as well as separating the person in shot from the background. Being creative is a way to engage your audience, therefore using different colors, cookies, etc. on the background creates texture, meaning a more interesting visual. Also, if the camera angled to the right, the light should come from the left. To get the best of the sound quality, we will not use the built-in microphone on the camera. In interviews, if there is a loud background, ask the interviewee to talk louder and move the microphone closer.

As I’m also the editor as well, I’m responsible to give good quality to the documentary. I should help with capturing useful camera shots. And then synchronize high quality sound with shots, putting the scenes in the most useful order is my job too. If it is not in a useful order, it should be re-done, so the documentary runs smoothly. Choosing effective music, so the documentary is attractive, and finding any technical problems, which must be removed (like color, graphic, wrong shoots, etc. must be taken out) are also my responsibility. And, in my opinion, most importantly, I must double check the documentary before handing it in as a finished product.

A brief statement on how the problem is related to the unit AOI

The AOI, Health and Social Education, is related to this Design Cycle unit because the purpose of our documentary is supposed to change negative thoughts or actions regarding these heritage sites into positive, as a concept of Health and Social Education is “how I think and act”. I also think researching about my heritage site myself will change my look on religion. And for the people who’s Catholic life depends on Christ the King Chapel, such as Sister Joseffina who had worked at the chapel all her life and had said “The chapel is part of my religious life. I cannot live without it”, our documentary should protect those people. This relates to the AOI because another concept is “how do I look after myself and others”.

Evaluation of the Investigate Stage What have I learned, what went wrong, how could I improve next time

In the Investigate stage I have learned the background of Christ the King Chapel. Such as the date of when the Chapel was opened; May 10, 1930, because of Mother Margaret’s hard work. And in 1941, the chapel was under threat because of the Second World War, and the purpose of the church expanded; not only healing souls, but tending the physically injured and ill and shelter the vulnerable women and children. An amazing concept of the chapel’s architecture is that the chapel has no pillars. Therefore, everywhere you stand, the altar is visible!

I don’t think I did so well managing my time. A large quantity of the Investigate stage was in the space of 1 day. Part of this was because I started taking notes on a site that wasn’t relevant to the chapel in Hong Kong, rather, the Christ the King Chapel in New York. However, even though there was this problem, some of the concepts in the Investigate stage could have been finished without an abundance of research.

To improve for the next Investigate stage next year, I would like to manage my time better. Although laying out what I will do in each day can consume some time, there would be less pressure on me if I work on each stage gradually. Not everything in 1 day!

Beverley Naidoo's - The Other Side of Truth - Novel Response 2

Chapter 15 is powerful  because there is an abundance of suspension. There is suspension because the question "what are Sade and Femi going to do?" is always in the audience's mind, through the uneasiness Sade and Femi were feeling. For example, there were numerous thoughts that represented Sade's fear and not knowing what she could possibly do, she knew that she and Femi "couldn't keep silent forever" (Naidoo 83) and the question "what could they say that was safe" pondered across Sade's mind. This was useful to create suspension because, since they were in a very tight situation, not knowing whether they could trust Iyawo-Jenny, it was worded in a way that made it  suggest that Sade was feeling helpless. This is because in the paragraph the last few quotes were in, included that they were pressed to talk but they didn't know what to say.

Sade was reluctant to respond to the questions that the Social Worker asked because she did not want to give away any information that will lead to there father's imprisonment or death. This fact is evident in Chapter 15 as Beverley Naidoo stated that Sade was thinking about "if the police in England sent the information to the police in Nigeria" (Naidoo 82).

Haiku Composition Reflection

I made a Haiku poem, and then added music and pictures to enhance this Haiku. HERE is the Haiku.

I think the thing that worked well was the drawing I did. This is because, when you are creating something, I was free to draw whatever I like, therefore, I could capture the perfect picture that I saw in my mind when I listened to the music.

I think the thing that didn't work so well in my Haiku composition was the pictures taken from the internet. This is because that even though the pictures included the lily flower, it didn't really enhance my Haiku.
The hardest decision I made was deciding what kind of live track to do, in the end, I composed a new piece, using 1 note in each measure that would be the same as the note in Peer Gynt. This was a hard decision, because I needed to have a live track that still enhances my Haiku, and there wasn't another piece of music that I had that both enhances my Haiku and is easy to the ears with the other piece; Peer Gynt.

The easiest decision I made was deciding what ready-made music I would add to my Haiku, besides my live track. My ready-made music was Peer Gynt Suite because when I hear this song I think of mountains, and lilies. And I think of lilies on mountains, oddly enough, and I really wanted to included Peer Gynt anyway.

I enjoyed the Haiku composition because you could choose the topic that inspired you. Therefore, your interests may lead you to some beautiful (if that's what you intend) music.

Beverley Naidoo's The Other Side of Truth -Novel Response

Throughout the novel, there has been evidence that the authorities are corrupt. Such as how Folarin's article, 'Our Children's Future', the truth, are "sending their children to the most expensive schools and colleges of England and America" (Naidoo 58), while Folarin's children and many others don't have this luxurious education and money. This is an example of the authorities being corrupt because the authorities are only thinking of their own children, not the children of Nigeria. Another example of the authorities being corrupt is how the police would take money from drivers in order to let them pass, although "mostly  taxi drivers with minibuses full of passengers had to pay up" (Naidoo 58). This is being corrupt because the police is taking advantage of the taxi drivers who have to pay to go past since the passengers would be exceptionally angry if the taxi driver didn't take them to their destination because of police who won't let them through since they haven't paid.

I believe the feeling Sade felt in the paragraph, which begins with "Soon they were traveling…", were depression and how unrealistic her situation is. The type of depression Sade was feeling at that moment was home-sick. I believe this because at that moment Sade was thinking about how she was separated from her family, how she was "thousands of miles away from home… Grandma and all the family… and, most terrible of all, Mama… forever and ever" (Naidoo 58). Beverley Naidoo was able to express Sade's thoughts on this by using "…", making you pause when you read. Alike to when you are extremely sad, and attempting to get your words out. Although being home-sick can happen to anyone, when I think of someone being home-sick, I think of a depressed small child. I believe that this concept connects to Sade's home-sickness because of the phrase "forever and ever". In this context, it is the sort of phrase a child would use. To enhance the feeling of Sade feeling homesick, Beverley Naidoo included a flash back to a routine they would go through in the morning; "…Papa listened every morning at breakfast to the BBC World Service broadcasting from London" (Naidoo 58) and how "Mama would put her finger to her lips if Sade or Femi started to talk. It had been like that only yesterday morning" (Naidoo 58). Beverley Naidoo included this flash back to enhance this emotion because that routine that they had gone through all their life, was gone, after 1 day, that routine, was no longer possible.

Sade also felt that her situation is unrealistic because there were many sentences that suggested unreal items. Such as the phrase "a postcard view of London up the river. Like the one Uncle Dele had sent them" (Naidoo 58). When you receive a post card, on the front there is a perfect view, a view of where you are not, since you are the one receiving it, and in many cases, a view that may not be captured again, due to the lingering people. But they are seeing this view, that used to be just a piece of paper. So it was unrealistic, since it was as if Sade had entered the postcard itself. Connecting to how Sade felt that the things they saw might just as well be cardboard cutouts on a film set they had entered by mistake" (Naidoo 58). This sentence is useful in this context since movies easily give away to the audience that their situation looks real, but it isn't real, since that's what movies are.
