Design Cycle 4 - Evaluate

I've finished the last stage of the last design cycle for Grade 7! Here's my Evaluate stage...

Although the resolution of the images wasn’t satisfactory, the rest of the design specifications were met. In fact, all of the questions that were asked in the survey resulted in mostly positive perspective, especially in how the media was effective. However, even through redoing, and redoing voiceovers throughout the Create stage, slightly over one quarter of the survey participants still thought that the documentary had poor sound quality.

Our job was to make a documentary that informs the community of Christ the King Chapel, and will make people want to take action to preserve the chapel. We have met part of this need, because the majority of the survey participants were able to list 3 facts about Christ the King Chapel after watching our documentary. However, preserving Christ the King Chapel has not crossed the mind of our audience, as the importance of this was only briefly touched on in the beginning of the documentary.

If I could do this project again, I would want, at the end of the film, to express the great importance that preserving Christ the King Chapel has, as well as how to do this. In fact, as a side project (most likely after the Summer), I would like to learn on how to preserve Christ the King Chapel.

Overall Reflection

Throughout all the stages, I believe that researching a pacific topic was easiest. Like when I researched about using green screen, I used the advanced google search. The biggest difficulty through this whole process was managing my time. Such as leaving things to the last day or doing forgotten tasks in a rush. If I could do this design cycle again, I would redo the plan. I didn’t give a lot of thought to it, and it was sort of rushed as well. Maybe if I had given more care I would have had an even more successful product.

Impact

The documentary has informed the community. It’s been seen by my classmates and visitors to my blog. I think the biggest impact, though, was on myself. After learning the great importance the chapel has, I want to try to help preserve Christ the King Chapel, although it could take awhile.

Saturday, April 21 – Changes to Design AND Plan

Throughout the Create stage, my group has made numerous changes to our shot list. Due to not finding the music “Hallelujah”, another music replaced it “Deo Gratias-Ismeretlen szerző Mint szarvas a hűs forr” (used in shot 1 and 2). We also couldn’t find a picture of the construction of the chapel (was to be used in shot 8). On the day of our field trip, it was raining, so we had to change the places we were to film, which was in shot 6 and 13. At the chapel, Sister Joseffina was present, and would be a tragedy to miss such a reliable primary source. Because of this, Sister Joseffina was our interviewee instead of a visitor to the chapel. And lastly, the total duration of the documentary was around 1 min. longer than estimated. This is because there was a few extra seconds left in each shot, in the documentary. I did this because, when I cut off those few seconds, the documentary sounds too rushed.
Changes to the plan wasn’t, oddly enough, because of the changes of the shot list. It was more because of time management. Zehra and I had to do 2 extra days of recording voice overs. Also, we had to use the green screen the room on the 18th of April. Cropping the film was needed, as well. However, the estimated durations of each task, was moderately accurate.

Saturday, April 14 ~ Tuesday, April 17 – Gathering Media

Zehra and I worked together to find the media that will be in our documentary. We had to record voiceovers, find pictures and music (Zehra found the music). When recording voiceovers we had to use a microphone brought from home, because we weren’t provided with one, as we thought we would be. It was much better quality than the built-in microphone, however, it could’ve been improved with a higher quality microphone. When recording, we used Garageband, as you can see in the picture on the left. When searching for pictures, I had to keep in mind the Design Specifications. The pictures have to be relevant, attractive and high resolution. These guidelines helped me when I had to choose which picture to include, because, as you can see in the picture on the right, there was countless photos.

Sunday, March 4 – Film Quality (Technical Director Role)

Besides collecting the music, pictures and voiceovers, we needed film as well. Skills that I had learned in the Investigate stage about the Technical Director, was not only applied on the days of visiting the chapel (skills such as placing the interviewee in a place with good lighting, and quiet areas, and using a microphone to get the best out of the sound). For example, I suggested that we use voiceovers so people can clearly understand what is being said. When we were filming, we tried to position ourselves to be in the light. As you can see, on the right, the light was exceptionally well done, however, it was studio light (we were in the green screen room), and this kind of wasn’t available at the chapel.

The most challenging part was adding the voiceovers, aligning the visual and audio took a bunch of my time, just as I expected in my plan (I estimated for 1 hour). However, we did have to redo voiceovers numerous times. Adding transitions, pictures and music was simple and quick, however. If I could do all these tasks again (as these set of tasks did take up a lot of time), I would focus on one section at a time, not scattered all over the place, with adding this music and cropping that shot... I think I could’ve been finished 30 min. earlier than what I expected to do in my plan if I had kept focused. One of the tools we used in iMovie was the Green Screen option. In order to use this tool, I had to enable advanced options. This tool was very useful.

The picture above, it what my screen looked like when I was evaluating Zehra and I’s documentary against my design specifications that we made in the Investigation. After completing it, all the design specifications, were checked as “yes, the documentary has this”. All, that is, except for 2. This design specification was “visually attractive”, I couldn’t check this, as it is really an opinion, and was not a good design spec to begin with. The other design specification was “high resolution pictures / videos”. After watching it, full screen on my computer, it was a tad pixelated. However when I saw it on the internet, around half of my screen, it looked fine! I can recall, unfortunately, there wasn’t any better quality of photos on the internet, that fit my shot list.

Tuesday, April 24 – Reflection on Learning and Progress

Through the create stage, I’ve learned how to use the green screen option. In iMovie, you have to go to Preferences, under the iMovie tab at the top of the screen. And then click the box saying Show Advanced Tools. Then, when you drag the green screen footage onto a picture or video, you will appear in the photo / video. From the peer review, one of the comments was that my entries were detailed. Also, the people who peer reviewed me said that they would probably give me 5!
I think I did well with being creative. Such as, at the beginning of the documentary, there is a shot where the globe zooms into Christ the King Chapel. However, I don’t think I did so well, with managing my time, as I said before, we needed 3 EXTRA DAYS of voiceovers. Which meant that for those three days, I had double the work, and because of that, I worked for unfortunately longer than what was planned.
If I could do this again I would like to be more focused. So then, I wouldn’t have to rush through my homework from my other subjects, because I’ve been too busy working on design cycle.

After finishing Design and Plan, there is Create! Surprises are still to come... but here is my Plan of the Create stage!

Timeline You need to create a timeline of your tasks, which simply means presenting your tasks using a calendar, e.g iCal

Peer Review Peer review your plan with other students who have the same role as you. Do you need to make any changes to your plan? What changes do you need to make and why?

After looking viewing a task list with the role of the editor, I didn’t think I had anything to change because all tasks relating to the role I had before hand. However, when I looked at a task list with the role of the technical director, there was a few things I left out. Such as the task of handing in Create (which is essential to get a mark) and editing the documentary after the review date. I also had changed something else, although I didn’t make the change due to the peer review. After a day or two after my peer review, I realized it would be best to make a check list of what has to be done on the day of the field trip.

Question Reflection A strong attempt at answering the following questions: Was the plan detailed enough and why? Could the plan be followed by someone else and why?

After having experience with the previous design cycles, therefore, after looking at  all the feedback I’ve gotten from past Plan stages, I think my task list is detailed and logical. And I’ve asked a few people whether they personally thought the plan could be followed, and they have all responded yes.

Evaluation Detailed reflection on learning and progress. What did you learn? What did you do well / not so well? What improvements would you make next time?

Because we were planning to interview a visitor of the chapel, we had to know when people will be visiting. With our prior knowledge of people visit churches on Sundays, we researched to find out what times will they visit on Sunday. Our results were: 8:30, 9:30 and 11:30. I think I did well in spreading out my jobs, this way I’ll be able to easily follow my plan. To improve for next year, I would like to find people who care more about my task list. The people I found, as mentioned in the Question Reflection, they read the task list for around 5 - 10 sec. and then said “yes”.

Individual Script Apply what you have learned about your heritage location and develop a narrative (script)

Emma’s Individual Script

ZEHRA

Hong Kong. Before our eyes, the area around us is developing. An exceptional quantity of our community is not familiar of the value historical and cultural architecture in Hong Kong have. Therefore, the existence of heritage sites in Hong Kong are at risk.

EMMA

Here we are at the 80-year-old Christ the King Chapel. This chapel is a significance in many catholic religious lives.

EMMA

Such as back then with Sister Joseffina, who had worked at the chapel all her life. “The chapel [was] a part of [her] religious life. [She could not have lived] without it”. And even now there are numerous people in our community alike to Sister Joseffina.

ZEHRA

On the day of April 21st, 1928, the foundation stone of the chapel was placed. On it, was engraved the words “serving the kingdom of God and upholding the love and fraternity in the family of God”. By 1930, after an abundance of Mother Margaret’s effort, the chapel was blessed. On May 10th, the chapel was opened.

EMMA

The chapel’s assistance became important during the Second World War. At the chapel, the physically injured and ill were tended, as well as the healing of souls. The vulnerable children and women were sheltered at the chapel, too.

ZEHRA

Through the years Christ the King Chapel had gone through, there has been a renovation -- the design was changed.

EMMA

The structure has Roman style, however there are Corinthian columns that surrounds the chapel. The most amazing characteristic of the chapel is that it has no pillars, whatsoever. As a result, wherever you stand the altar is visible.

ZEHRA

The chapel is still in use today. The chapel welcomes Catholics, and pays no mind to race, age, gender, et cetera. This is Christ the King Chapel.

A group of Hong Kong’s most cherished historical sites are hidden amongst the city’s ever-towering skyscrapers. Before our eyes the city is rapidly changing, and many sites that express so much culture and heritage may be gone by the time our generation become adults –often to be replaced by yet more structures of glass and steel.

ZEHRA

Here we are at the 80-year-old Christ the King Chapel, the impact that this monument has had on the local community is huge, they have relied on the church immensely because it not only provided for the religious needs of the local Roman Catholics but has also been a centre for the activities of the wider community. For example; back in WWII hundreds of women and children sought protection during the war, here the chapel held out a helping hand and offered food, water and shelter for those whose homes were destroyed by bombs in the war the chapel also offered help to those who were physically injured and ill as well as  healing broken souls. During this time the chapel itself was under great threat from the WWII bombs. However it used all its resources to help the homeless.

The script has been improved because we meshed both scripts together, meaning we got more information. For example, information regarding other people besides Sister Jossffina that have relied on the chapel, as well as other ways the chapel helped. Information regarding the architecture such as the Greek concepts within the chapel was also added.

Evaluation What have I learned, what went wrong, how could I improve next time

Through the Design stage, I have learned, although this isn’t part of my role, the different shots. This knowledge was needed because, in the shot list, it was required to have the type of shot, to help Zehra with this, I took 5 mins to learn the names of each shot.

A challenge we came across in this stage was thinking of questions that would be suitable for an interview. Before that, we had decided to include an interview, however, we did not think of what questions to ask, or who to ask. Discussing what our interview questions should be took up time that was supposed to be for the shot list. Therefore, we had to stay after school twice to work on the shot list.

To improve for next time, I would like to quickly think of what has to be done, other than what is mentioned on the handout. If I do this in the future, no time would be wasted to work that has been forgotten.

Design Cycle 4 - Investigate

Revised Problem Statement What is the problem I am trying to solve, how significant in the problem, who does it affect etc

An exceptional quantity of our community is not familiar of the value historical and cultural architecture in Hong Kong have. As a result, these heritage site’s existence are at risk because of growth within our city. Even if people within our community have no attachment to these heritage sites, others are passionate, and it would be devastating to lost these sites. As a caring and global leader, informing our community of the importance of the historical structures.

Design Brief What you are going to make (documentary genre), why you are making and whom you are you making it for? What are the responsibilities within your role

I will be creating a product for the international schools in Hong Kong, by uploading our documentary to Vimeo, in order preserve the heritage sites that have an abundance of cultural and historical value. We have to adjust our documentary for this audience by having our documentary informative, so it will be the reality genre because a school’s purpose is education, and reality genre can inform our audience. Also engaging, so it will be relatively short, 3-5 minutes. Applications such as iMovie and Garageband will be used.

As a portion of the technical director, as I’m in a group of 2, I’m responsible for part of the light and sound quality of the documentary. For light we would most likely use the natural lighting - not studio light. Back light would be useful as it highlights facial features and hair, as well as separating the person in shot from the background. Being creative is a way to engage your audience, therefore using different colors, cookies, etc. on the background creates texture, meaning a more interesting visual. Also, if the camera angled to the right, the light should come from the left. To get the best of the sound quality, we will not use the built-in microphone on the camera. In interviews, if there is a loud background, ask the interviewee to talk louder and move the microphone closer.

As I’m also the editor as well, I’m responsible to give good quality to the documentary. I should help with capturing useful camera shots. And then synchronize high quality sound with shots, putting the scenes in the most useful order is my job too. If it is not in a useful order, it should be re-done, so the documentary runs smoothly. Choosing effective music, so the documentary is attractive, and finding any technical problems, which must be removed (like color, graphic, wrong shoots, etc. must be taken out) are also my responsibility. And, in my opinion, most importantly, I must double check the documentary before handing it in as a finished product.

A brief statement on how the problem is related to the unit AOI

The AOI, Health and Social Education, is related to this Design Cycle unit because the purpose of our documentary is supposed to change negative thoughts or actions regarding these heritage sites into positive, as a concept of Health and Social Education is “how I think and act”. I also think researching about my heritage site myself will change my look on religion. And for the people who’s Catholic life depends on Christ the King Chapel, such as Sister Joseffina who had worked at the chapel all her life and had said “The chapel is part of my religious life. I cannot live without it”, our documentary should protect those people. This relates to the AOI because another concept is “how do I look after myself and others”.

Evaluation of the Investigate Stage What have I learned, what went wrong, how could I improve next time

In the Investigate stage I have learned the background of Christ the King Chapel. Such as the date of when the Chapel was opened; May 10, 1930, because of Mother Margaret’s hard work. And in 1941, the chapel was under threat because of the Second World War, and the purpose of the church expanded; not only healing souls, but tending the physically injured and ill and shelter the vulnerable women and children. An amazing concept of the chapel’s architecture is that the chapel has no pillars. Therefore, everywhere you stand, the altar is visible!

I don’t think I did so well managing my time. A large quantity of the Investigate stage was in the space of 1 day. Part of this was because I started taking notes on a site that wasn’t relevant to the chapel in Hong Kong, rather, the Christ the King Chapel in New York. However, even though there was this problem, some of the concepts in the Investigate stage could have been finished without an abundance of research.

To improve for the next Investigate stage next year, I would like to manage my time better. Although laying out what I will do in each day can consume some time, there would be less pressure on me if I work on each stage gradually. Not everything in 1 day!

Design Cycle 3 - Evaluate

Here's the final stage, the Evaluate stage, for the Design Cycle!

SCREENSHOTS OF MY SURVEY:

Most of the responses were useless (there was 11 responses), as they were not relevant to my product, there fore, I have listed only the helpful and constructive comments. However, if I were to do that, there would be one comment; “I learned that Chinese families come together to celebrate Chinese New Year”. Although I tried hard to make my survey quick, it still seems that I’m not getting constructive feedback.

PRODUCT EFFECTIVENESS:

From my survey results, I can evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the images used in my product. The majority of the people who did my survey answered ‘somewhat’. Therefore, it is evident that my pictures don’t clearly state it’s purpose with just looking at it. The tones I spoke wasn’t consistently clear. This was because I was speaking too slow and the music was too loud. There was numerous different opinions whether or not the tone I was speaking in was conversational and had expression. Because of this, I had to go back and listen very carefully to my podcast once again, when doing this I understand the debate for this question; some parts of the podcast was conversational and had expression, but sometimes it didn’t.

PRODUCT’S IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED:

To improve my podcast, I would need to choose my pictures and plan my pictures more carefully, making sure that they clearly explain and enhance what is being said. I also need to ensure that the speech could be easily heard and talk at a reasonable pace. And lastly, I need to work on the consistency of talking in a conversational tone and have expression.

PERFORMANCE OF THE DESIGN CYCLE:

Investigate:

In the Investigate stage, I know I worked efficiently in class, stayed focus, and managed my time well. As a result, I had a list of more than 5 design specifications, a consice statement on how the unit relates to the AOI, effective survey questions (with both open and closed questions), and numerous citations in MLA format; results worthy of a 5. I found making citations easy, because I used NoodleTools; an efficient way to form citations. However, I found making efficient survey questions difficult. This is because I had to re-write, and re-write again after getting feedback on the efficiency of my survey questions, as I knew the survey questions had to be precise and that will be essential in the Evaluate stage.

Design:

Due to my complicated shotlist, I believed I worked very efficiently in the Design stage. I wasn’t rushing because of my good time management as well! I think I included relatively strong comparison and reflection of my peers design as well. I also was smart and looked at the rubric before handing my Design in and realized we also needed a ‘detailed evaluation of your design against the design specifications’; I think my Design is worthy of a 4 or 5. I found translating the lyrics easy, because I knew many simple characters so when I came across these characters, it was easy to understand the sentence. I found the comparison of the peers shotlist, because I had to turn on my critical eye; and that has been one of my weak points.

Plan:

Since I worked smart, I finished the Design earlier and got started on the plan at a comfortable date. However, part of my working on Plan intertwined with my working on Design. In other words, I worked smart! I think I had a reasonable detailed task list and I think I spread out my activities well. And I think I had a reasonably strong evaluation as well, with evidence. Again, I think my Plan is worthy of a 4 or 5. I can easily plan my time well, so I found the Plan stage easy.

Create:

In the Create stage, I didn’t follow my plan and there were flaws in my design (which is normal), however because of this, I worked even harder to ensure that I would definitely meet the deadline, all the while have a effective podcast. In my process journal, I had 6 screenshots, satisfactory explanations of software tools and techniques I used and changes to the plan stated; results worthy of a 4. I found the making of the Process Journal easy because I can show my work easily; it is one of my strengths. I found recording my speech hard because oral presentation is one of my weak points.

I’m proud of all my hard work for this Design Cycle!

IMPACTS OF MY PRODUCT:

The impact my product has had on life, society and the environment is the knowledge of my community regarding the legend of the Nian Monster. Through my product, my audience was informed of what the legend was about and how it had impacted life as it is now. Such as why people wear red on Chinese New Year and make lots of noise on Chinese New Year.

Progress Journal

Changes to Design and Plan                                                                                                 Ongoing

After getting started with the Create stage I realized some concepts in Design and Plan that I couldn’t follow.

In my Design, I stated I would use iMovie when adding the media, and using iMovie to make my podcast. Afterward I submitted Design and Plan, I was notified that we would be using Garage Band to make the podcast. I have mentally adjusted my plan for what I will be using for Create. However, in Create I have still used iMovie, although it is not my main application. Fortunately, I am capable with Garage Band, therefore, there will be no extra research needed.

Another flaw in my Design was that there was a video I couldn’t find that fit the description beside it, because of this I had to draw an extra picture to fit that description. I’m also going to need to put the citations for all the media at the end of podcast, and use keynote to make the frame for my pictures. However, recently I realized video and pictures are unable to be in the same podcast. Due to this, everything in my podcast will be a picture.

And lastly, due to unexpected events, I was unable to meet deadlines I have stated in my Plan (everything was delayed 1 day, I couldn’t work on Design Cycle on Tuesday; the day we started Create). However, I believe I will still meet the deadline and there is no need for worry.

Selecting Pictures and Videos 9th February

In the ScreenShot above, there is the different URLs of the photos found in the Investigate stage, When looking through these photos, I referred regularly at my Design and Investigate page. I looked at Design to check if this picture would fit the descriptions I have written, and the Investigate page to assure that it would fit my Design Specifications. After I found a picture which fit the Design and Design Specifications, I saved it.

Cutting Videos 9th February

Here, I used iMovie to cut videos taken from the internet into the sections that I need. To do this I first downloaded the videos to iTunes, from which I imported to iMovie. From there, I used the Clip Trimmer to cut it. After cutting it, I had to check if the duration of the clip met the duration I estimated in the Design stage.

Draw Pictures 10th February

Drawing the pictures was the next step to make my podcast. To make these pictures, I used the simple paper and colored pencils. When making these pictures, I didn’t focus on the materials I used, rather, how I made it. I do hope that the little effects I drew, such as the direction that the pencils were stroked. After drawing, I scanned the pictures and saved it, now ready to be put into my podcast.

Add Media to Podcast 11th February

The photo above is what my screen looked like half way through of putting the media on to my podcast. There is the audio media and the visual media would be added soon after this photo was taken. Fortunately, the music takes up the whole 3 minutes that my podcast will be. As I have stated in the Changes, all the videos I had planned I wasn’t able to add because I wasn’t only aloud to add to Garage Band.

Adjusting Volume 11 February

After adding the media, I had to adjust the volume of the music and speech. I did this by using the Track Volume scale. I had to make sure that the volume for the speech was louder than the music, so the audience could hear the legend. I also had to make sure that the music wasn’t too soft that the audience couldn’t hear me at all. When adjusting the volume, I had to listen to the podcast again and again until it got to the correct volume for the music and speech.
